Dr. Calimer Martek (b. 1962 - ), a figure often cited as a "first generationer" of the retroaging movement, emerged from what is anachronistically referred to as the vintage-tech age. His early career was characterized by classical medical training in the venerable institutions of LondonPrime. By the time he was in his fifties, a period when many of his peers were contemplating retirement, Martek, ever the pioneer, relocated to the North American continent, specifically the region then known as the United States. It was here that he cemented his reputation. As a professor specializing in the nascent field of human aging, he amassed a considerable and influential body of work, authoring numerous seminal papers that shaped the early discourse on longevity. This academic prominence naturally led him to the entrepreneurial frontier, culminating in his role as a co-founder of Altos Labs. This biotech powerhouse, established in the early 21st century, focused on the radical goal of reversing biological aging, a mission heavily financed by the visionary Amazon entrepreneur, Jeff Bezos.
At the age of 79, a time when most would expect to be winding down, Martek took a definitive and deeply personal step, enrolling as a trial subject in his own company's vanguard initiative: the Cellular Reprogramming Project. The results of this groundbreaking endeavor were nothing short of miraculous. Over the span of the next decade, Martek's biological age experienced a profound reversal, shedding twenty years of accumulated time. Following this success, he was transitioned to the newly developed senolytic therapy. This treatment was designed to combat aging by systematically clearing the body of senescent cells (the so called zombie cells) which were then widely believed to be the fundamental cause of the aging process and its associated pathologies.
While the majority of early retroaging subjects elected to reset their biological age (or circa age, a term coined to distinguish it from the actual birth age) to the vigor of their mid-thirties, Martek made a deliberate and strategic choice. He elected to maintain a circa age of 50. This decision was calculated, in that he firmly believed that the "circa 50" aesthetic conferred the necessary look of seasoned experience and gravitas that would be instrumental in navigating his career. This perceived advantage was crucial as he ascended to the position of Chief Executive Officer of the newly rechristened entity, Altos-Martek Labs. It is a notable detail that, despite the fact that circa age has largely ceased to influence public perception and judgment since the 2130s, Martek has steadfastly maintained his iconic circa 50s appearance.
Martek’s personal life, however, was struck by a terrible tragedy. He had married in 2085 and fathered a son. For a while he settled in to family life. However, both his wife and son were tragically and permanently lost in a boating accident while on a family holiday on an island in the Earthish Pacific, leaving a chasm in his life that the advancements of retroaging could not heal.
For a period following this loss, Martek's activities become less documented. His name resurfaced only when he was selected for an ambitious off-world scientific program. This mission tasked him with the specialized study of the pre-Cambrian rainforest located on the second planet orbiting the red giant T15. This placement had a dramatic and violent conclusion during the infamous Setright attack.
Martek was discovered and subsequently repatriated by the Mungo-Gundel-Arkil Retrieval and Repatriation (R&R) team as the sole known living survivor of the Setright attack. The R&R team harbored significant hope that his unique perspective would provide crucial insights into the attack that had decimated the Setright facility just prior to the T15 supernova. However, once Martek regained consciousness, it clear that he was not going to be able to help further the investigation, as he was suffering from severe retrograde amnesia. This condition rendered him completely unable to assist the R&R team in their immediate, critical investigation into the circumstances surrounding the attack.
In the aftermath of the harrowing events, a deep and enduring friendship formed between Martek and Arkil of the R&R team. Martek proved to be an invaluable source of support and mentorship for Arkil during the latter's complex and challenging transition into a human form modality.
Today, Dr. Martek continues to contribute his expertise within a specialized agency based in Ohio. His work is now focused on the complex, human aspects of reintegration for individuals returning from profound experiences, and managing the intricate sending infrastructure.
